Orthodontic treatment can begin as early as childhood, around the age of 6-7, when the doctor can identify problems in the development of occlusion. However, there is no age limit – adults can benefit from braces or aligners to improve dental alignment and masticatory function.
The duration of treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case and the type of dental appliance used. On average, treatment lasts between 12 and 24 months, but it can be shorter or longer depending on the particularities of each patient.
In the first few days after the braces are fitted or after regular adjustments, patients may experience mild discomfort or pressure on their teeth, which gradually subsides. With aligners, discomfort is minimal and only occurs when changing the aligners.
With fixed braces, it is recommended to avoid hard, sticky or very hard foods such as nuts, popcorn, chewing gum and caramels as they can damage the brackets. Spark aligners can be removed during meals, allowing patients to eat without restrictions.
After removing your braces, it is essential to wear your retainers as directed by your doctor. Otherwise, your teeth may gradually migrate back to their original position, compromising the results of your orthodontic treatment.
